Life & Money Quotes of the Week: July 09 '23

It's not easy surviving life/capitalism. It can be done though. It takes a lot of work, and intentionality.

Capitalism Sucks

I know it's brought lots of gains, but it's also brought lots of hardship. And I'm not talking about markets here, but the current way we practice capitalism with the end goal being to constantly increase how much capital one has. The goal that gets subtly and less subtly ingrained is that I need to get more. Sometimes we're taught to care about those we're affecting in our search for more, but sometimes we're taught not to worry about them. Either way, the goal is more capital. There are a lot of downsides with this. It's what we live with at the moment though, so we need to learn how to live within the system, even as we work for a better one.

Don't Let Urgent Overtake Life

Avoiding urgent overtaking life is part of why I like planning. When you plan things out, you're now able to see what the trade-offs are to deal with something 'urgent'. Sometimes the trade-offs are worth it, sometimes not. It's really hard to compare though when you don't have anything concrete to compare to.

Don't Save Too Much

I realize this isn't the first quote I've shared with a similar message, but it's unfortunately all too common to save more than needed, or to work more than needed. Generally it happens when you don't really know how much you'll need once you stop needing to work for money. It's possible to figure this out though. And give yourself back some time.
